Day 15 - 'You shall not murder' in the Ten Commandments

Bible Verse: Exodus 20:13

'You shall not murder.'

The sixth commandment, 'You shall not murder.', isn't just about refraining from taking another person's life. On a deeper level, it's about respect for life itself, and the recognition that life is a sacred gift from Yahuah.

Let's look at a scenario: The children in a family get into a heated argument. In the heat of the moment, one child says to the other, "I wish you were never born!" Even though it's not a physical act of violence, the child's words disregard the value of their sibling's life, going against the spirit of 'You shall not murder.'

In our daily lives, we should be mindful of not only physical harm to others, but also emotional or verbal harm. Unkind words, bullying, or even harmful thoughts against others fall under this commandment, as they all disvalue life in some form.

Questions to contemplate:

  • Why do you think Yahuah values life so much that He includes 'You shall not murder' in the Ten Commandments?

  • How can we foster a deeper respect and value for life in our family?

  • Can you think of ways we unintentionally 'kill' through our words or actions? How can we prevent doing so?

Prayer:

Yahuah, instill in us a deep respect for life. Check our hearts and tongues from causing harm to others, and guide us in the path of love and respect for all. Amen.
